Liner Notes

Paste your résumé. See what a post supervisor's first read catches.

A line-by-line check for sound résumés, free and right here. Every finding quotes the line it's about: gear lists, credits with no role or year, vague claims, and layouts an applicant-tracking system can't read.

21 things to fix

125 words · 5 bullets read

  1. Contactwhole résumé

No phone number. Add one next to your email so a recruiter can call straight from the page.

  2. Missing sectionwhole résumé

No "Skills" heading. ATS parsers file your résumé by standard headings — add one on its own line.

  3. Missing sectionwhole résumé

No "Education" heading. ATS parsers file your résumé by standard headings — add one on its own line.

  4. Lengthwhole résumé

125 words — thin for a full résumé (aim for 150–900). Each role needs 3–5 bullets with results.

  5. ATS layoutline 1
ALEX MORENO | SOUND DESIGN | MIXING | FOLEY

This line is laid out in columns (tabs, runs of spaces or | dividers). ATS parsers read left to right and scramble columns — keep one column and put dates after a comma.

  6. Headingline 4
    About Me

“About Me” isn't a heading ATS parsers expect. Call it Summary, and make it two lines of fact.

  7. First personline 5
I am a passionate audio guru who lives and breathes sound. I bring a unique sonic vision to every project.

“I” — résumés drop the first person. Start the line with the action instead.

  8. Vague claimline 5
I am a passionate audio guru who lives and breathes sound. I bring a unique sonic vision to every project.

“passionate” is a claim nobody can check. Replace it with a fact: your discipline, years, the kind of work (film, TV, games, music) and one thing you're known for.

  9. ATS layoutline 8
Freelance Sound Designer 2019 - Present

This line is laid out in columns (tabs, runs of spaces or | dividers). ATS parsers read left to right and scramble columns — keep one column and put dates after a comma.

  10. Duty, not workline 9
★ Worked on sound for various indie films and games

“worked on” describes a duty, not the work. Open with what you did — cut, recorded, designed, mixed, implemented — and end on the scale: episodes, minutes, assets, the delivery spec.

  11. ATS layoutline 9
★ Worked on sound for various indie films and games

Symbol bullets (★ ➤ ♪) often come through an applicant-tracking system as garbage or drop the line. Use a plain hyphen or a standard bullet.

  12. Duty, not workline 10
★ Responsible for dialogue editing, foley, sound effects, ambiences and the final mix on many short films for directors in the local scene and online

“responsible for” describes a duty, not the work. Open with what you did — cut, recorded, designed, mixed, implemented — and end on the scale: episodes, minutes, assets, the delivery spec.

  13. Gear listline 11
★ Pro Tools, Reaper, iZotope RX, Wwise, FMOD, Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sennheiser MKH 416

12 tools named, no work described. A supervisor hires what you did with them — say what you cut, recorded or built, and move the list to one Tools line.

  14. Datesline 13
Studio Assistant, Harbor Lane Post 06/2018 – 12/2019

Dates here are written "MM/YYYY", but most of the résumé uses "YYYY only". Pick one format and use it everywhere.

  15. Duty, not workline 14
    ★ Helped with sessions

“helped with” describes a duty, not the work. Open with what you did — cut, recorded, designed, mixed, implemented — and end on the scale: episodes, minutes, assets, the delivery spec.

  16. Duty, not workline 15
    ★ Did recording and editing

“did recording” describes a duty, not the work. Open with what you did — cut, recorded, designed, mixed, implemented — and end on the scale: episodes, minutes, assets, the delivery spec.

  17. Credit missing contextline 18
    The Long Field

Credit with no role and no year. A credit only counts when it says what you did: Project — Role — Studio or label — Year.

  18. Credit missing contextline 19
    Night Shift (2021)

Credit with no role. A credit only counts when it says what you did: Project — Role — Studio or label — Year.

  19. Credit missing contextline 20
    Glasshouse — 2022

Credit with no role. A credit only counts when it says what you did: Project — Role — Studio or label — Year.

  20. Credit missing contextline 21
    Ember Run (video game)

Credit with no role and no year. A credit only counts when it says what you did: Project — Role — Studio or label — Year.

  21. Gear listline 23
    Gear

A standalone gear section reads as a kit list, not a career. Fold the tools you really use into one Tools line under Skills; own kit only matters for production-sound roles — then one line, not a section.
